The estate

Domaine de Chevalier has a long history. It appears, named "Chivaley" in the old Gascon language on the map drawn by King Louis XVI's geographer Pierre de Belleyme in 1783. It was acquired in 1983 by the Bernard Family, the French leader on the brandy market and major Bordeaux wine merchant. It has been managed since by Olivier Bernard who this outstanding estate's spirit of balance, elegance and subtelty. Domaine de Chevalier Red is one of the leading Bordeaux great classified growths, while Domaine de Chevalier White is recognised as one of the greatest dry whites in the world.

"Only a great terroir can produce a great wine… I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, today in organic conversion, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion – balance…"

The vineyard

The vineyard, located south-west of Léognan, in the heart of the forest, extends over nearly 70 hectares, including 7 hectares of white on clay-gravelly soils. Protected by its forest setting, it benefits from a microclimate effect and a biodiversity that together form a high quality ecosystem.

The vintage

Since 1986, the planting of young vines at DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER has necessitated the blending of a second wine called L'ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER.

The Spirit is also a way of making wine.
By naming their second wine L'ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER, the Bernard family wanted it to bear the Chevalier mark and reflect the "Spirit" of the estate: power and complexity, but also finesse and elegance.
The red wine of L'ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER is aged for 14 months in oak barrels, one third of which are new.
It is a seductive wine, which can be enjoyed younger than the grand vin.

A VINTAGE AMONG THE GREATESTS :

This vintage is characterized by its aromatic intensity, excellent fruit maturity, density and freshness.
- A wet spring, with two frost attacks (April 13 and May 5) contained thanks to the means deployed. Very good vine growth.
- Flowering slighty disturbed by weather insta-bility, without preventing a good harvest volume.
- Exceptional summer wich arrives precisely on the calendar date… and which will last from June 21 to October 15. During this period, we experienced two waves of great heat (June 26-27 ; July 22-25)
- Expected precipitation which occurs at strategic times: late July and early August, heavy rains triggered veraison. The vine did not suffer from the drought.
- The excellent conditions of September: great weather and, from Sept. 20, small showers that rebalance the sugar/acid potential of the skins and give the grapes a lot of freshness. All this going hand in hand with rater cold night. This thermal amplitude is particularly beneficial for the quality of ripening.

Tasting Notes

Eye, bouquet, palate

Great aromas of red and black fruits, radiant and glowing freshness. Dense and elegant on the palate, intensely fruity and lively. The quality of the tannins is superb, supple and firm at the same time. This is a wine of great suavity, with class and balance. Magnificent finish. Concentrated, harmonious, with great sapidity. Very good ageing potential even if very accessible in its youth.
