The estate

Domaine de Chevalier has a long history. It appears, named "Chivaley" in the old Gascon language on the map drawn by King Louis XVI's geographer Pierre de Belleyme in 1783. It was acquired in 1983 by the Bernard Family, the French leader on the brandy market and major Bordeaux wine merchant. It has been managed since by Olivier Bernard who this outstanding estate's spirit of balance, elegance and subtelty. Domaine de Chevalier Red is one of the leading Bordeaux great classified growths, while Domaine de Chevalier White is recognised as one of the greatest dry whites in the world.

"Only a great terroir can produce a great wine… I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, today in organic conversion, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion – balance…"

Visit of the Domaine de Chevalier with Oliver Bernard, owner

the vineyard

The vineyard, located south-west of Léognan, in the heart of the forest, extends over nearly 70 hectares, including 7 hectares of white on clay-gravelly soils. Protected by its forest setting, it benefits from a microclimate effect and a biodiversity that together form a high quality ecosystem.

"The choice of organic and biodynamic farming cannot be a trivial commitment. It is a complex process, strewn with doubts, questioning, whose effectiveness is the fruit of an intimate relationship with the plant and its environment. It requires this particular sensitivity, this permanent look, which alone allows one to open up to the life of nature and to the soul of a terroir. "

The vintage

The white Domaine de Chevalier is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines.

THE 2016 VINTAGE: HISTORICAL AND GENEROUS

The unquestionably successful 2016 vintage is due to the conjunction of several important factors.
- A rainy period lasting from the 1st of January to the 20th of June replenished water reserves and paved the way for a large potential crop.
- Quasi-miraculous flowering guaranteed a large crop [from the 4th to the 11th of June]
- An exceptionally dry period from the 1st of July to the 13th of September was conducive to richness and power.
We were really in need of rain by early September! This finally arrived, on the 13th of that month. These 40 mm of rain did a world of good, giving a boost to ripening and refreshing the vines.

Tasting Notes

Eye, bouquet, palate

TASTING Crystalline, pale gold color. Punchy, pulpy, intense, fresh and complex nose. The aromas of grapefruit, orange, peach and mango blend with balsamic (pine) and mineral (quartz, flint) fragrances. The whole terroir of Chevalier is revealed in this great nose. On the palate, an exquisite and intense pulpy richness is combined with a beautiful fruity acidity. A cocktail of spicy and soft white fruits releases very silky flavors. This feeling of sweetness reflects the perfect maturity of healthy fruits. The flesh of this wine leads to a great purity and an tremendous delicacy. Very elegant body. Sophisticated wine, deeply tasty and perfectly balanced. Great persistence. To keep.
