The estate

David Hohnen is credited with the creation of Cloudy Bay, having been one of the first to see the exceptional potential of New Zealand's Marlborough Valley for the Sauvignon Blanc grape.

In 1985, Cloudy Bay produced its first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc, a wine with character.

Today, Cloudy Bay produces a variety of wines from its Marlborough terroirs, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and traditional method Pelorus. The quality and diversity of these wines are a testament to the unique conditions that have made Marlborough an exceptional wine region.

Cloudy Bay is known for its ambition to explore new horizons. In 2000, the winery launched Te Koko, a barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc that revolutionized the perception of the region's signature grape. Since 2009, Cloudy Bay has also produced a new wine, Te Wahi Pinot Noir.

Cloudy Bay wines are an invitation to discover the wonders of New Zealand.

The vineyard

The Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are located in a very special area of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. Here, the stony, draining soils and warm sunlight create the perfect conditions for the distinctive and unique style of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc.

With yields lower than the regional average, attention to detail is essential in the Cloudy Bay vineyards. Lower yields concentrate the flavor and complexity of the grapes. The Cloudy Bay team handles them delicately in the winery, ensuring that what you taste in the glass is a true reflection of the vintage and the vineyard.

Each June, the blending committee evaluates nearly 90 Sauvignon Blanc samples from separate parcels, then selects the wines that will make up the final blend. In some years, the decision is made to select up to 30% of the samples, ensuring the same quality year after year.

The Vintage

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is largely sourced from vineyards planted in the Wairau Valley floor, where the climate and free-draining gravelly soils are perfect for Sauvignon Blanc. This includes New Zealand's Estate, Motukawa, Widow's Block, Red Shed and Mustang vineyards. 2022 presented more challenges than the previous three years. The season started off well, with water reserves replenished by abundant rainfall over the winter. Spring was mild and our protection systems easily mitigated the little frost there was. Despite the unstable weather during flowering, the Sauvignon Blanc flowered successfully.

After harvest, the free-run juice was cold settled, before being racked and inoculated with selected yeasts. Fermentation was done primarily in stainless steel tanks, with about 5% of the blend fermented at higher temperatures in large oak tanks. A portion was also fermented with wild yeast to enhance texture and complexity. As usual, the Sauvignon Blanc was carefully blended to include only the best; in 2022, 107 different portions were tasted, of which 77 were selected to create the final blend.
