The estate

Three centuries, three families

In nearly three centuries, Château Pontet-Canet has known only three owner families. This stability and singularity are exceptional in the Médoc. In 1705, Jean-François de Pontet, Grand Écuyer to Louis XV, created a vineyard north of Pauillac and associated his name with it. Then, in 1865, the influential merchant, Henri Herman Cruse, brought a new wind by modernizing the infrastructure. In 1975, Guy Tesseron, a Cognac winemaker, opened a new chapter. Twenty years later, he entrusted the management of the estate to his son, Alfred. Today, his children, Justine and Noé, work with him to preserve a unique heritage in the world. Consecration during the famous 1855 classification ordered by Napoleon III: Château Pontet-Canet is on the list of the Grands Crus Classés du Médoc.

The vineyard

A land of choice

The vineyards of Pontet-Canet, located in the commune of Pauillac, cover 81 hectares facing the Gironde estuary. On the gravelly hilltops, the Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of the Médoc, and the Cabernet Franc flourish. The more clayey soils are home to Merlot and Petit Verdot. On the hillock, the old vines, the oldest of which date back to 1931, produce the most beautiful grapes. The average age of the vineyard is 50 years.

Biodynamics

In 2004, after years of research and questioning, the principles of biodynamics were adopted in order to reveal in all their purity the expressions of the micro-terroirs. To generously give back to nature what it gives. In 2010, Château Pontet-Canet became the first Grand Cru Classé in the Médoc to obtain the double certification, organic and biodynamic, for its entire vineyard. The horse is a companion of labor. Today 10 percherons work half of the vineyard.

The respect of the plant

Research and experimentation with practices that are ever more respectful of the natural balance of the soil and the plant so that each vine interprets the soul of the terroir in its own way. Thus, we have given up pollarding in favor of manual interlacing of the branches (bridges), as well as plowing, trimming, leaf removal and green harvesting.

The Vintage

The last vintages in "7" have been rainy in Bordeaux. However, this year it was the frost during a freezing night in late April that marked the vintage.
Fortunately, the Gironde estuary protected the vineyards of the great Medoc appellations. Our losses were therefore minor. Then, the weather was very favorable to the vines during the whole season or almost. The flowers in mid-May and the berries opened on July 7th attest to these favorable conditions.
Despite some rain in September, the sanitary state remained perfect until the moment of the most optimal maturity. For the Merlot, we started the harvest on September 18th, then 10 days later, it was the turn of the Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by the Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot.

This year we have added a new vat room with 32 concrete tanks of 40 hl. It allows a real return to the essential, with the setting in tank then the wine making without machine and without noise, only with the hand of the man.

Tasting Notes

Eye, bouquet, palate

The wine is deep, glossy crimson. The fresh nose reveals an elegant balance of fruity, floral and mineral notes. Great harmony is found on the palate between a highly refined tannic structure and comforting depth and length. A very fine wine indeed.
