The estate

Saint-Estèphe’s prestigious vineyards developed around the Meyney estate. From the middle of the 13th century, the land was managed by Cistercian monks who made it one of the first structured wine-producing properties in the northern Médoc. Long coveted by the wealthy merchants and aristocrats of Bordeaux, the vineyard was returned to the church when Pierre Forthon bequeathed it to the Pères Feuillants in 1625, the official date of the creation of the es tate. The term «château» was attached to Meyney by the Luetkens family in the 19th century, when it entered the modern era thanks to a series of inspired women. In 1919, the Cordiers, a powerful family of merchants, acquired the property and developed an international reputation and distribution for Meyney’s wines.

Since its acquisition by the Crédit Agricole group in 004, this sleeping beauty has been awakened under the leadership of Anne Le Naour and more recently, Boris Diallo and Thomas Hernandez.

The vineyard

The terroir is remarkable: Château Meyney is located on a gravelly hillside naturally drained towards the estuary and ideally exposed. A steep slope gradually brings the vineyard up to an altitude of 20 meters, which facilitates the natural drainage of the land. The gravel rests on a deep clay-limestone base, an essential moisture reserve for the vine roots during dry spells.
Another singularity: a local micro-climate generated by the proximity of the Gironde estuary which, by deploying masses of water, acts as a real natural regulator during intense cold and heat waves. The terroir is ideally ventilated and generously exposed to the sun. In addition to the Garonne gravels, the vineyard has an original and rare contribution in the Médoc: a 3-meter-thick vein of blue clay about fifty centimeters deep. This pedological typicity confers a very velvety structure to the wines of Meyney.

The Vintage

Although the start of the year brought a great deal of rain and created a surplus of water throughout the Bordeaux wine region, summer 2018 will be remembered for its incredible heat! The radiant and spontaneous smiles on the faces of our staff were the most obvious sign of the confidence and enthusiasm for this vintage. The first clip of the secateurs set the tone! The grape harvests were
accompanied by lovely sunshine to the delight of the grape pickers and our permanent staff. Although the Merlots had already brought a smile to our faces,
the Cabernets proved to be even more magnificent, confirming t he exceptional potential of the vintage. 2018 will be big, extraordinary even...

Tasting Notes

Eye, bouquet, palate

Purple violet. Filigree, complex, inviting bouquet. Notes of liquorice wood, pepper and black cherries. On the palate, the wine is dense, creamy and endowed with a tannic baggage that will see it through a few decades. Its tannins are powerful but also fine and are in perfect harmony with the acid structure. Fruity and persistent finish. A balanced, fine and powerful wine. A great wine.
